Antique Japanese Musha Ningyo Doll Meiji Period Late 19th Century
ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD MUSHA NINGYO DOLL FOR DISPLAY ON BOYS DAY. This is a beautifully crafted doll from the Meiji Period which is used for display for Tango-no-Sekku or Boys Festival which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month. This is ancient Japanese celebration in which beautiful miniature figures representing heroes and great men of ancient Japan and popular legendary heroes are displayed in the best room in the house to be inspirational to the sons of the family. The doll is beautifully made with intricate detail. The fabrics used are silk which originally would have been in vibrant colours, rich purple and gold as can be seen in the areas of the costume which have been covered. The costumes have been faithfully copied down to the intricate detail round the neck with four layers and an amazing breastplate (probably papier mache).

The sleeves are amazing with an undershirt and a shorter overshirt all beautifully trimmed and finished. The straw sandals are exquisite and I believe the hair is original. The doll was originally presented in its own wooden box which sadly is missing and he should have something in his right hand. Others I have seen carry a pole with a banner attached which is a Buddhist prayer.

This particular character is the attendant of Kato Kiyomasa, a great warrior, and they are normally displayed together. Please view the photographs to see the amazing detail in all this costume.

There is a lavish use of silk thread, silk fabric. Please read the condition report. If you need any further information or photos please ask. Height of doll which is i kneeling figure is 11.5" x approx 9".
