Kozan Satsuma Plate Samurai Archer on Horseback Japanese Meiji Period 19th C. The Kozan studio produced some of the highest quality ceramics made in Japan and participated in many of the great international expositions in Europe and America during the Meiji era. Among other achievements the kiln was commissioned for works to be presented to the Prince of Wales, the 25th wedding anniversary gift for the Taisho emperor and the Showa Emperors coronation gift.
This is a remarkable work of art and a rare depiction of a Samurai archer on horseback. The quality of workmanship on this piece is mind boggling and cannot be overstated. Hallmarked on the underside with the Kozan hand painted mark as shown. Also has an old tag "1364".
