During Japan's Meiji Period, that nation's craftsmen achieved a high level of excellence in the making of ceramics, and this large and lovely Satsuma trumpet shaped vase is indicative of the fine quality that characterized this period. The vase, which dates from around 1900 to 1910, is signed on its base with a maker's mark that is slightly rubbed (see photo 3).Measuring 9 1/2 inches high, 5 inches at its base (not including the three feet), and 7 inches at its mouth, the vase is in generally very good condition. There is some typical rubbing to the gilding (most noticeable around the waist) and a tiny loss or rough spot on one of the feet (see photos 11-12), but these issues do little to affect the overall beauty and presence of this fine work. The decoration on the vase is exceptionally well done by a very talented artisan.
