Meiji Period Japanese Gold Lacquer Biwa Box UNIQUE
We are pleased to offer this early Meiji Period, Japanese, lacquer, Biwa box in gold, Cicra 1850s. Characteristics include a handsome, stylized, dragon; whimsical, cumulus clouds; dimensional details carved within a buildup of gold lacquer and adorned with pressed gold leaf; beautiful, golden-red nashiji (design made by sprinkling wet lacquer with metallic powder) finishes upon the reverse side, within the internal surfaces of both the base and lid, as well as the box rim; and hand-carved, bone tuning pegs. Please note, this box has had minimal restoration performed upon it including touch ups with gold paint and newly-carved tuning pegs. Also, it shows signs of wear commensurate with age and use including a few faintly visible cracks. (due to natural aging of the materials used), some minor loss of the gold leaf, and a slightly worn surface (reverse, top). See photos for more details! Dimensions: 3 x 8.25. We are a working jewelry store and gallery and, therefore, are not available to answer questions on weekends. All of our pieces are guaranteed genuine-- no reproductions!
