MEASURES 10" HIGH (AT HANDLE), 5" HIGH AT JAR WITH A 5 SQUARE BODY. THE TOP DIAMETER IS 4 1/2 IN DIAMETER. THE CONDITION IS EXCELLENT WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR REPAIRS. THE ENAMELING AND GILDING ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THERE IS NORMAL CRAZING AS IS OFTEN FOUND ON SATSUMA POTTERY (SEE PHOTOS).
SATUMA IS A YELLOWISH EARTHENWARE USUALLY DECORATED WITH DETAILED JAPANESE FIGURES WITH EXPRESSIVE FACIAL FEATURES, LANDSCAPES AND SOMETIMES FURTHER EMBELLISHED WITH DRAGONS. THIS WARE WAS GENERALLY CREATED FOR THE EXPORT MARKET OF THE MID-19th CENTURY TO CATER TO WESTERN MARKETS.
