A fine Japanese hand painted Satsuma vase. Signed on the bottom Hododa, above the signature is a circle with a cross denoting the Shimazu clan mark.
Date Meiji period late 19th century. The vase has 6 sides and is decorated with two main panels, one with Samuel warriors and the other with courtly ladies in a domesticated landscape setting. The vase is in good condition with no cracks , there is some rubbing to the gilding to the rim and to the two small figures on the neck. As shown in the last picture a small piece to the foot rim has broken off and been reattached. Height 6 inches 15 cm.
