Marvelous Scene of Royalty at Leisure, 1878. It is his Royal Boating Party. Chikanobu was from a distinguished samurai family and fought in support of the Tokugawa shogunate against the forces of the Emperor Meiji. As a youth he studied under both Kuniyoshi and Kunichika. Though he designed many warrior and kabuki prints, he is perhaps best known for his marvelous bijin-ga, or beauty portraits, such as in this wonderful triptych.
A love scene of the ladies of the royal court enjoying a Spring boat ride. Would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. And is bound to become a cherished family heirloom. Hashimoto Chikanobu's masterworks are in the collections of many of the world's great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as well as the Tokyo National Museum.
