Arita is a town in Japan where porcelain has been made for centuries. Hizen was a province that surrounded. Hizen is considered the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. In the early 17th century, the first Japanese porcelain was produced in Hizen.
With porcelain clay being discovered near Arita at the end of the 16th century, various kilns where opened up eventually producing the first Japanese porcelain out of the province of Hizen in the early 17th century. This particular piece is 12" in diameter and about 1 1/2" in depth. The mark on the bottom right of this charger actually translates to Hi (the Hi in Hizen). The condition of this charger is great.
