Antique Japanese Tansu Marquetry Scholars Travelling Writing Desk Meiji Period. A rare late 19th century Japanese Meiji period marquetry scholars box. The scholars box is decorated with. With metal handles and hinges. The two small tansu cabinets are united together with a top board and ruler(which is nearly always missing) and two lugs that slide into position (one lug has been repaired) which can be taken off and re-fitted to slot in place between the cabinets, forming a small desk.

The box consists of a lid that opens up to reveal two separate sections (as can be seen on the photographs), one having four drawers, the other having a door with two drawers within and a drawer below - these sections can be separated or kept as one single box. The scholars box was particularly used in Japan to store brushes, inkstones and items used for calligraphy. Which Japanese scholars would kneel at to work.

This box would be ideal storage for jewellery or for other small items. This box is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

It is in a very good antique condition with a great aged warm patina and waxed finish. Stunning quality and elegance which will never fail to impress on display. There are no keys but the. Locks have a sliding mechanism which works well to keep the drawer and cupboard door shut. Measures overall 14"across with a depth of 10.25"and stands 11 tall.

As a desk measures 27 across. Weighs around 4.791 Kilos!! Overall in very good condition with some. The centre top piece is a little warped only due to its age. The drawer interiors are generally very good though has some marking in a couple of drawers as shown and the centre top reverse has a small loss of black lacquer as shown and not seen when in either position.
