Antique Meiji Period Japanese Lacquered Jewelry Wood Box. The wood box in a rectangular shape has a slightly arched top and a symmetrical design to show a central cabinet with a hinged door and four removable drawers located at each side, respectively. The hinge of the door and pull handles of the drawers are in brass, whereas the screws for the hinge are in iron which can attract a magnet. Two shelves are seen when the door of the cabinet is open.
A key is accompanied but has no function. Underneath is a bigger removable drawer with fluted surfaces. Except the bottom, all the surfaces including the inside of the cabinet are hand painted with either flowers, foliate or birds in red and gold, and finished with black lacquer. Measures, Dimensions, 12" wide x 6" deep x 12 high; Weight, 5 lbs & 15 oz (2.69 kg). Condition: Very good and clean, with mild lacquer loss, a crack to the right lateral side as seen in photo 1, an arrow is further shown in photo 10 as an indicator, consistent with age and use.
