Beautiful Japanese Meiji period bronze vase cast with a bird and inlaid with fish dating from c. Artist's mark to the base. Naturalistic depiction of a bird at the side of a river trying to catch fish. The base of the neck has been modeled as a moss and root covered bank on which a small bird is perched with its head down with it's wings slightly lifted from it's back to give balance. Small fish are swimming away from danger those close to the surface shown in relief on the vase, those deeper in the water inlaid into the bronze.

The vase has a beautifully patinated bronze surface with. Size: 36 cm high x 19 cm diameter (max).

Condition: It is quite difficult to spot from most angles but on close inspection the bird's legs are detached from their feet but the bird's tail is attached to the neck so everything is stable. This break was probably caused by the differential tension between the connection at the neck and the connections on the shoulder via the feet. There are no other faults.
