The portable Meiji Dansu (Merchant Chest) made with the design of an extraordinary delicate touch considering the ruggedness of the appearance. And the iron handle used for the faces of the drawers signified the professions of business and of art, as early as the ninth and tenth centuries.
During those eras the boxes were often painted red. The Meiji period favored natural wood and iron hardware in appearance. Construction is tight, sturdy and honorable. This piece is an early version of the briefcase.
