Japanese Meiji Period Cloisonne Lacquer on Porcelain Totai Tree Bark Vase

A Rare Japanese Meiji Period (1868 1912) Cloisonné Lacquer on Porcelain (Tree Bark) vase. Commonly referred to as "Tree Bark" due to the textured lacquer on the main body of the vase, Although the Tree Bark cloisonné wares are often described as being enamel on porcelain, they are in fact Japanese (Urushi) lacquer on porcelain. They were made by fixing bronze wires to the porcelain vase with Mugi-Urushi a paste made from a mixture of fine rice flower, water and Urushi (A lacquer from the urushi tree Toxicodendron vernicifluum).

The Cloisons were then infilled with multiple layers of coloured Urushi, very often with a sprinkling of pure silver granules mixed into them. The whole vase was then sanded until level with the wires and then polished. Note: Urushi Lacquer has been used for thousands of years in Japan and China, it forms a very durable surface and has been used to cover furniture and various other decorative and household items, as well as decorating the arms and armour of the Samurai.
