This teapot is very unique in that it has internal heating mechanism - Hibachi style - where heated coals keep the water warm internally. This small, oblong teapot has several parts as you can see in the photos. The main body has a smaller round lidded chamber that has an iron grate at the bottom that has seven 1/2 holes in it. This is where hot coals would be placed.
There is an oval opening at the bottom of the main body that opens to below the grate to provide air flow to the coals. The other larger opening holds a separate round tubular vessel that has a closed bottom and a handle. This is where the water to be used for making the tea would be placed. We estimate it would hold 4-5 ounces. This vessel has a very small spout.
The opening at the top is somewhat decorative. Water would fill the chamber surrounding the heat source and that water would then heat the water in the tubular vessel for making the tea.
The top of the main body is hinged to allow for easy filling. We could find no markings other that the hand tooled floral patterns on each side of the main body.
A beautiful and hard to find piece. This teapot stands a little more than 6 ½ high at the top of the curved handle. It is about 6 ½" long at the spout and about 2 5/8" wide.
It weighs about one pound three ounces. Considering its age, this teapot is in very good condition. It shows age-appropriate wear and patina with a few small dents - the most noticeable right under the heating chamber air opening. We did not attempt to clean it. We also accept checks if you can wait the additional time it takes for the check to clear. We will not misrepresent the value of the item(s) nor mark them as "gifts".
