One of the nicest you'll find. Dating to the late Meiji era (1890 1912) carved JIZAI KAGI , this Jizai is unusually large measuring 22" L x 6" W, weight 35 lbs. Carved from a single block of cypress wood and with square pegs inserted in the sides for supension, the patina is dark brown to black and red in color. Cracks have formed as the wood has shrunk after over a century of use.
The jizai, part of every traditional Japanese home, is an architectural element of solid hardwood which was suspended from a ceiling beam over an irori , open fire hearth, to support a hanging kettle. Jizai are example of the simplicity and quality of Mingei, the tradition of crafting everyday objects.
