This fine late Meiji Era hanging lantern (Tsuri-doro) is made from gilded copper and was possibly created to illuminate a shrine or Buddhist temple. It is six sided pagoda shaped with projecting anchor pendant feet, fret cut doors and sides engraved and lined with rice paper and a roof embellished with twelve cartouche shaped projections each engraved with clouds. The lantern is 8" tall (including hanging ring) and is 6" in diameter.
