DSC Fine and Decorative Art. Meiji Period Japanese Satsuma Kutani Ceramic Fish Bowl.Though stylistically in keeping with ceramics from Satsuma, the bowl is of the hard-paste porcelain generally used in Kutani-ware. It is therefore part of a strange sub-genre, often referred to as Satsuma-Kutani, which comprises some of the finest ceramics of the Meiji Period. The decoration of the bowl centres around two pictorial panels: one showing a group of samurai dining in an open room, whilst another shows geisha in an ornamental garden. Smaller cartouches show pastoral scenes, with forested cliffs, lakes and foliage. The interior of the bowl features meticulously painted koi carp and shrimps. As is customary with Japanese decoration, these are beautifully observed, by an artist with more than a passing knowledge of the natural world. Though the condition of the bowl is good, the enamel paints are extremely fresh and without the wear that generally occurs in softer pastes. The hardness of the porcelain is less forgiving in the kiln and the stress cracking, which leads to a semi-circular repair is an unfortunate consequence of that.
